The ' Deployment Image Servicing and Management ' (DISM for short) command line tool built into Windows was first introduced in Windows Vista to create and manage Windows images based on the Windows image file format (.wim). . Another advantage is that it is compatible with the encrypted and compressed electronic software download (.esd) file format introduced in Windows 8.1. DISM hasn't changed much since it first came out in 2014, and it works largely the same on Windows 10 and 11.

The “service” included in the name of the DISM Phone Number List utility is a broad term that encompasses a variety of functions. It covers everything from capturing a disk partition and creating a disk image based on its contents to mounting and modifying the disk image.
I use DISM for routine system maintenance on Windows 10 and 11. Here, we will focus on the following DISM tasks.
Install Windows updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog or another package file source
Recover Windows 10 or 11 Image
Free up disk space by cleaning up Windows component storage
Identify Windows images, installers, and ISO files
Identify and change international settings for Windows images
To use DISM for these tasks, you must open an administrative command line prompt or administrative PowerShell session. Just type cmd or powershell in the Windows search box, right-click Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell in the results list, select Run as administrator, and enter your password if prompted.
Install Windows updates using DISM
First, if you look at my article ' Installing Windows updates using DISM ', you can see how to use the dism /Add-Package option to install catalogs or other updates in .cab or .msu format to the target Windows image. This method is useful when Windows Update is not working properly or when managing large-scale or remote deployments. Basically, it is a method of adding updates to the Windows image, also called “slipstreaming.” For more details, please refer to the article.

In the article ‘ 4 Steps to Repair Windows 10 and 11 ’, I detailed the steps I always use to fix a malfunctioning Windows system. In step 1, the status of the Windows image is checked using DISM, and the status is restored to normal using /checkhealth, /scanhealth, and /restorehealth as switches for DISM's /cleanup-image option. <Screen 1> shows some information about these commands. For step-by-step instructions and explanations, please refer to the Windows recovery article mentioned above.

Cleaning up Windows component storage using DISM
The WinSxS folder stores Windows component storage files that support Windows updates and customization. As updates are added to Windows over time, in addition to the components that are already there, entries for each update are stored in the Windows component store, resulting in a mixture of new components and older components that have become obsolete. Some level of clutter inevitably occurs.
DISM offers two ways to get rid of this clutter. The first method is to find and delete older versions of the updated components from the Windows component repository using the following two commands.
